Will it work on your windows?

Three questions about the glass you want cleaned.

Does the glass sit in a frame on all four sides?

Most house windows do. If you can see the bare edge of the glass, answer No: one of our robots can still do it.

At home, between runs

It lives by the window and takes a minute to set up: rope, water, plug, place.

The Panorama (PuRuiKai PRK-28) is our robot for bigger homes and big glass: bifold and patio doors, full-height panes and high windows that are hard to reach. A sensor at each corner finds the edge of the glass, frame or no frame, so it also works on frameless windows, mirrors and shower glass. It’s square, about 22 x 22 cm, with one square pad underneath.

Four sprayers, two on each side, mist the glass, and its 100 ml tank holds twice as much as the Compact’s. On the remote or the Tuya Smart app you choose a horizontal, vertical or both-ways route, or steer it to one patch and clean there. When it’s done, it goes back to where it started.

It runs on mains power through a 4 m cable, with a backup battery that holds it on the glass for up to 20 minutes in a power cut. Pre-recorded voice prompts tell you what it’s doing: when it starts a route, when the tank runs low and when the job’s done.

Before the first run

How to use it
  1. Fit the pad. Line its edge up with the robot’s edge. Keep it clear of the drive wheels and the four corner sensors, and don’t soak it.
  2. Add water. Turn the robot over, open the silicone cover and fill the tank to about 90% with water or window-cleaning liquid. Wipe off any drips.
  3. Fix the rope. Check the rope and its clip, then tie the free end to something solid in the room.
  4. Connect the power. Push the cord into the robot and tighten the nut. Plug the adapter into the wall.
  5. Charge. The light shows orange while it charges and green when it’s full, after about 3.5 hours. Charge it to full before the first run.
  6. Start. Switch on and check the fan turns. Hold the robot about 8 cm from the edge of the glass, press it to the glass, make sure it holds, let go and press start.
  7. Choose a route. Z for horizontal, N for vertical, Z/N for both. When it’s done, it goes back to where it started.
  8. Spot clean. Steer it with the arrows, then hold OK for 2 seconds.
  9. Spray. Auto spray is on from the start. AU turns it off or on, and the robot tells you which. The water-drop key gives one spray.
  10. Use the app (optional). Install the Tuya Smart app, switch on Bluetooth and location, tap Add Device and choose Robot Window Cleaner. If it doesn’t appear, press the robot’s power button three times and try again.
  11. Finish. Hold the robot, hold start for 2 seconds until the fan stops, and take it off. Switch off, unclip the rope, unplug and pour out the water. Wash the pad, wipe the fan, corner sensors and wheels, and store it dry. The remote’s up arrow starts a wheel-cleaning mode.

Lights: Orange: charging. Blue: working. Green: charged. Red: fault.

If something’s off

  • Slipping: the pad is too wet, or the track is dirty.
  • Stops partway: check the pad is fitted straight.
  • Two buzzes: an edge sensor tripped. Carry on.
  • Squeaking: dust on a corner sensor or the track.
  • Stuck at a raised glass edge: steer it past by hand.
Safety
  • Tie the safety rope to a fixed point indoors before every run. Check the rope and the clip first.
  • Stay nearby the whole time it runs. Keep children away from it.
  • Charge the backup battery to full before you start.
  • Framed or frameless glass, as long as it’s flat, smooth and undamaged. Not curved glass, such as car windows.
  • Check the seal around the edge of the glass is intact before you start.
  • Not in rain, wet weather or strong wind. Not on cracked, chipped, damaged or uneven glass.
  • Switch it on first, then place it. Check it holds before you let go.
  • Clear anything stuck to the glass before you start.
  • Hold the robot when you switch it off.
  • Use the adapter that came in the box. Keep hair and loose clothing clear of it.
  • Keep it away from flammable gases, open flames, running baths and swimming pools. Unplug it before you clean it.
  • Cleaning a window above a path or doorway? Keep people clear of the area below.
  • If the power cuts out, it sounds a warning and holds. Take it down straight away: pull it back with care by the rope, keeping the rope close to the glass.
What it is not for

The Panorama does frameless glass, but skip it for:

  • Georgian bars, leaded lights, grid or multi-pane windows, textured glass
  • Glass with stickers or window film
  • Cracked, chipped or curved glass
  • Rain, wet glass, strong wind, or below 0 °C or above 40 °C
  • Bird droppings and caked dirt (scrape them off first)
  • Running with nobody nearby
  • Tiles: the gaps between them break the seal

Questions about the Panorama

Does it have an app?

Yes. Besides the remote, you can use the Tuya Smart app over Bluetooth to switch it on and off, pick a route, spot clean and control the spray.

Does it clean the corners?

It’s square, so it reaches every corner and edge. The Compact’s round pads miss them.

Does it work on frameless glass?

Yes. A sensor at each corner finds the edge of the glass, frame or no frame, and it turns before it runs off. Tie the safety rope every time all the same.

How is it different from the Compact?

It’s made for bigger homes and big glass. It finds the edge of frameless glass, and it’s square, with four sprayers instead of two, a 100 ml tank, an app and voice updates. It also costs more. Compare the two

How long does the backup battery last?

Up to 20 minutes on a full charge. In a power cut, take it down straight away.
